Yesterday the European Parliament adopted a EU binding energy savings target of at least 20% by 2020 in its revision of the 2006 energy efficiency action plan due to be released in March. It also called on the Commission to propose individual national energy efficiency targets, which at least achieve the 20% EU target.

According to European Commission studies, Energy efficiency measures will guarantee significantly lower energy bills for EU consumers [1] and create 1 million jobs in Europe[2].

This significative outcome is not only an important step towards the reduction of dangerous human-induced climate change, but sends a strong message to the Commission to adopt a serious Energy Efficiency Action Plan (due to be released on March 2011) and to the European Heads of State ahead of the 4th February Energy Summit.

The battle is far from over, though: Member States remain still low in ambition and unsupportive of binding targets. Can Europe will continue its work for the adoption of a fair EU Energy Efficiency binding target.
